PCS Courier: producing different results

  Here is a progress report from one of Teal Unicorn’s clients in Vietnam. PCS Courier is a division of our client PCS. PCS Courier recently were introduced to the work innovations  happening with great success in the parent company.

Dr Cherry Vu of Teal Unicorn trained and facilitated them in simple agile concepts: daily Scrum-style standup meetings; Teal Unicorn’s own version of Kanban boards (which we haven’t shared yet); and our version of the Agile concept of ShuHaRi, which we wrote about here.  They will all be in our upcoming books. 

This team grew 52% new customers and 22% revenue in a week. We are so proud of them

 

What did we do to produce different results?

Innovation is a popular term. In enterprises, innovation is considered as a decisive factor, an important resource for the success of enterprises in the market. Every innovation in the enterprise comes from the creative ideas of employees.

We are led by the parent company every step of the way into the “agile transformation journey”. We get used to terms like Stand-up Meeting, Kanban, ShuHaRi, etc. At first, we had a lot of mixed feelings about this.

– Complex? Confused with how the above terms work?

– Boring? Every day, you have to repeat things that have never been in your work plan.

– Waste time? During the event, we missed messages, notifications from our own customers and new tasks.

I was wondering at first, why is it called agile journey and why things have gone in the opposite direction? But after 2 weeks of implementing the above methods, I noticed that in my team there was an obvious change in some areas:

– Stand-up meeting was limited to 15-20 minutes. It is a simple small work but so powerful. Simply update the status/progress of the work, and call out the difficulties so that the whole team knows and takes coordinated action afterwards. This briefing helps us keep the pace of interaction among team members. Helps the team be more motivated to work every day.

– Kanban focuses on visualising the entire project/work on boards to increase transparency of work and collaboration among team members. It shows us big problems that need immediate resolution or support from others. Thereby empowering the team to self-manage workflows, inspiring team collaboration. Helps build a highly disciplined working environment, linking the working ability of each individual.

– ShuHaRi helps us analyse our strengths and weaknesses at work. For me, ShuHaRi’s ideas provide the thinking tools, language, and frames of reference to understand how to approach learning a new skill. When you first learn something, many ideas are often not the most helpful place to start. Once you’ve mastered the basics, move on to experimenting and finding ways to integrate new thoughts or ideas. Your experiments will lead you to new paths and you will eventually go beyond specific practices and develop your own way of doing things.

Now, having spent a month on the agile transformation journey, my team and I have arrived at a suitable solution for ourselves in particular and the sales department in general. Agile transformation helps us confidently go further, reach more customers, find more solutions to the problems we are facing. Because we know  “traveling alone can be faster, but when we go together, we can go further”.
