Fix the system so people can be their very best

Stop trying to change the people you have, either by “fixing” them or by swapping them for someone else.
They’re not broken or inadequate. They’re trapped in a bad system of work.

Fixing or swapping just disrupts the already poor system.
It’s the system, stupid. Fix the system, including the culture, the practices, the workflow, and the interactions. Especially the interactions: the relationships, behaviours, authority, policy, teaming, management etc.
(And yeah the technology, but its a low priority and low impact. Fixing tech on its own achieves nothing. And it’s the easy bit, comparatively: get a few smart people on the job and buy some stuff).

Most people come to work to do a good job. The very purpose of an organisation is to lift them to do their absolute best work they are capable of. It matters little who your staff are when they’re all at their best: they do great things together.
