Dont pay commission to individual sales people. Commission selling only constrains the sales process and induces competition within the company, including non-cooperation and withheld information. It also incentivises unethical behaviour with clients and with colleagues. We have great success by convincing clients to dump commissions entirely and pay the group for success. Nobody sells alone.
I worked in a big US sales corporation for 16 years. The top paid sales people are the lucky ones who fluked a bluebird. The next highest are the unethical ones who will do anything for a sale, not caring for the company or the customer. The mid performing sales people are team players who team sell, using all the resources. They do ok but the have to fight to get the help, because nobody else is much incented to do so, and all sales people compete for it.
Sure some sales people left. The “glory boys”, the hustlers, the get rich quick ones. The team players, with families and mortgages, they stay.
Our clients still pay good sales people a higher salary than many other employees to recognise their value, and their hard work. Sales people who aren’t primarily motivated by greed at the cost of others enjoy the stability of income.
