One sees a lot of talk about how capitalism cares only for the shareholders, willing to abuse and kill people to maximise profits. It’s simply not true.
Capitalism is an emergent property of society, like money or art. You can’t remove it. Somebody always profits from the means of production, as all the failed attempts at Communism have shown.
The problem isn’t capitalism. It’s unrestrained capitalism, like they have in the USA.
All through history, there have been shareholders and owners who pursued higher values than just “greed is good”, from the Cadburys to the Hiltons. And countries that legislated to make sure they do. Being awful is not a necessary consequence of capitalism, it’s what happens when you let pricks get control. Ask Boeing. Or the whole USA right now.
At Teal Unicorn, we have convinced multiple orgs to find their better selves, to care more about people and values, and to reap the benefits, which include higher profits.
#Capitalism is part of the landscape. We must shape it.
