Standardised work is a dirty word in the Agile world, but some work can indeed be standardised:
work in the Clear domain of Cynefin, i.e. defined repeatable transaction work. Someone wrote a book about it basicsm.com/standard-case.html
Standardised work provides opportunities for
– optimising quality and productivity
– safe work for Shu apprentices
– am escape from boredom for Ha practitioners
– predictable delivery
– measurable transactions
Think Continuous Delivery as an excellent example.
What is required is a broader system to allow us to exit standardised flow when it no longer fits, to deploy creative knowledge workers on the unstandardised cases, and to standardise new work when it becomes repetitive. Again, I refer you to the book.
