Retirement

Will we retire?

It seems that, while some of us accrue enough cash to go play golf or whatever, most of us will have to keep some money coming in as long as we are able.
Staying mentally and socially active isn’t a bad thing anyway. I get that those doing hard physical work or mindless transactional work are happy to stop, but more and more of us do knowledge work that has its own satisfactions.
Our capacity for work does wind down over time, of course. But so does our consumption of money.
And yet, much discussion of retirement still seems to be about a hard stop, and how to fund that. And being miserable when we can’t.
Life isn’t simple black-and-white any more. Change is incremental and continuous. We need a new word to replace “retire” that doesn’t imply a binary state change.
