You can’t build teams. Only teams can build teams. People aren’t bricks.
We can facilitate, support, coach, advise … but the team builds the team. They’re grownup peers.
Conventional management and consulting get so damn patronising. what I’m getting at here is it should never be done TO people.
I’ve used the gardener metaphor a lot but even that is patronising, asymmetric. The gardener has great power over the plant. The gardener may invite the plant to grow, but the gardener decides where, and throws the plant away if need be.
